From Lac la Hache, we traveled to Prince George where we stopped at Costco to pick up some new supplies and left an hour later. We continued on to Tyhee Lake Provincial Park where the girls watched loons on the lake and played outside until 11pm under the midnight sun. We spent a lazy day at the beach in the sunshine while the girls played with kids from nearby Smithers, BC at the park playground.
We left Tyhee Lake the following day and headed north under grey and rainy skies to Stewart, BC. Bear Glacier heralded our arrival to this wilderness. After driving through the tiny community of Stewart, BC, we decided to continue on to neighbouring Hyder, Alaska since the girls wanted to spend the night in Alaska. Upon our arrival, we spotted three bears in the first ten minutes. We settled in for the night at Camp Run-a-Muck and spotted a bear just two picnic tables away going for our neighbours' ribs that were on the BBQ.
We checked out the local attractions and saw bald eagles and river otters at the Hyder Marina. The next day brought a trek out to Salmon Glacier, a walk on the estuary boardwalk, foraging for salmon berries and some playtime in the playground.
We also discovered the tell-tale signs of a mouse in the house...POOP! Mark set the traps, we sanitized and discarded the fruit and when we returned to the camper we had caught the little guy. The girls were intrigued and we had yet another opportunity to learn about life and death.....homeschooling at its best!
