Cassiar Highway - Steward, BC to Teslin Lake, Yukon

The Cassiar Highway is one route north to the Yukon from northern BC. We decided to follow this road on the way up and take the Alaska Highway back on the way south in September. Some portions were stunningly beautiful with snow-capped peaks, lakes of blue and seemingly endless swaths of forest. Other sections were entirely forgettable stretches of swampy muskeg and endless mosquito-breeding territory. One guide book refers to it as, "Miles and miles of miles and miles."

Our two day stop at Kinaskan Lake Provincial Park was lovely when the wind was blowing, but changed entirely when it stopped and the swarms of mosquitoes descended. The photo of the sun shining over the lake was taken at 10pm, so you can get an idea of how hard it is to put everyone to bed. The girls delighted in digging up a moose antler which Mark discovered buried in the dirt along our hike. Nightly campfires mean that the girls have become experts at marshmallow roasting and connoisseurs of smores!

Our next stop down the road was at Watson Lake, Yukon. We stocked up on supplies at the local store and even found some Weisswurst sausages which is a nod to the Germans who frequent this area. We toured the town and took photos of the signpost forest which has 1000s of signs from all over the world. You can leave your own mark there and the "forest" is always growing!

Our final stop on this leg of the tour was the tiny outpost of Teslin in the Yukon. We fueled up and toured the local museum which had great exhibits of local wildlife.
