Playa Santa Maria, Cabo, Mexico

We departed the lagoon at Lopez Mateos in the late afternoon and made it to La Paz just after sunset. We had planned to spend a week or two in the La Paz area, but the weather sent us packing. After checking the wind warnings for Playa Tecolote, we decided to keep driving south and made it all the way to Cabo San Lucas at the southern terminus of the Baja! We spotted the iconic rock arches at Land’s End and knew we had made it!

We stayed for four nights in Cabo San Lucas to restock our supplies and give Heidi time to get over the flu bug which Nicole had passed along. We visited Playa Santa Maria which is a picturesque white sand beach with stunning turquoise waters. The tour boats all stop here for excellent snorkelling and photo opportunities. We arrived just as the booze cruise boats were pulling away and enjoyed a blissfully quiet and beautiful afternoon at the beach. There was abundant sea life by the rocks bordering the bay, but most impressive were the songs of the humpback whales which could be heard echoing off the rocks when you dove two metres underwater. Their melodies were so loud and clear that you would have guessed the whale was right behind you! We watched them breach and do back flips about 400m offshore. It was absolutely amazing!
