Stewart, BC and Hyder, Alaska

From Lac la Hache, we traveled to Prince George where we stopped at Costco to pick up some new supplies and left an hour later. We continued on to Tyhee Lake Provincial Park where the girls watched loons on the lake and played outside until 11pm under the midnight sun. We spent a lazy day at the beach in the sunshine while the girls played with kids from nearby Smithers, BC at the park playground.

We left Tyhee Lake the following day and headed north under grey and rainy skies to Stewart, BC. Bear Glacier heralded our arrival to this wilderness. After driving through the tiny community of Stewart, BC, we decided to continue on to neighbouring Hyder, Alaska since the girls wanted to spend the night in Alaska. Upon our arrival, we spotted three bears in the first ten minutes. We settled in for the night at Camp Run-a-Muck and spotted a bear just two picnic tables away going for our neighbours' ribs that were on the BBQ.

We checked out the local attractions and saw bald eagles and river otters at the Hyder Marina. The next day brought a trek out to Salmon Glacier, a walk on the estuary boardwalk, foraging for salmon berries and some playtime in the playground.

We also discovered the tell-tale signs of a mouse in the house...POOP! Mark set the traps, we sanitized and discarded the fruit and when we returned to the camper we had caught the little guy. The girls were intrigued and we had yet another opportunity to learn about life and death.....homeschooling at its best!

Lac La Hache, BC

The haul to northern BC and the Yukon has officially begun! We logged some serious miles after getting off the ferry in Vancouver and made our way north to Emory Bar RV Park. We collapsed into bed only to be woken every 20 minutes by train whistles and roaring transport trucks which were 100m from our home in the camper. The tri-fecta: river, road, railway!

Despite the sleepless night, we got back on the road again the next morning to check out Hell's Gate en route to Lac La Hache just past 100 Mile House. We traveled through the Fraser and Thompson River Canyons with surreal landscapes which varied from a humid forest to an arid plateau.

We arrived in Lac La Hache and spent the next day lounging around in the sunshine. The girls went swimming in the cool waters of the lake and then hopped in the boat to go fishing with Daddy. They both caught Kokanee Salmon, but Heidi chose to release hers while Nicole wanted to eat her fish for dinner. (Heidi is a bigger fan of burgers than salmon.) They both got a great anatomy lesson while Mark cleaned and gutted the fish. Nicole gobbled up her dinner and had no problems eating the fish she caught just an hour before. It was delicious!

While Mark and I were packing up the camper and boat, the girls made fast friends with our new neighbours' Yorkshire Terriers. They took them for a walk, played with them and fed them treats. They decided that a 10 lb dog is the perfect size for little girls!
