During the last year on the road, we have come to realize that our family does best when we travel without plans or reservations and simply let the trip unfold on its own. You never know what gems you will stumble upon. We are grateful to fellow travellers and locals who provided us with insights and suggestions not published in any guide book. Many of our favourite campgrounds turned out to be the ones we were guided to by people we met along the way. Luckily, we have been able to go with the flow for most of our trip. As summer crowds surge towards the coast and into the national parks, we have been forced to alter our plans and make reservations when we could get them. Most folks have one or two weeks vacation and they plan these trips six months to a year in advance. We found that the reality of the reservation system is a necessary evil for summer crowds and holiday weekends. If you prefer to go with the flow, like we do, then off season travel is infinitely easier.
In the scorching heat of July, we found a lovely little respite outside of Sequoia National Park in the town of Three Rivers. The girls gave themselves mud baths and cooled off in the river. We stayed up late star-gazing and lounged lazily by the river before climbing to 6,500 feet to feel the delightful chill of altitude amidst the sequoias.
