East Cape Hurricane Surfing, Baja, Mexico
After our visit to the Mexican mainland, it was time to go back to the Baja and begin the drive north towards San Diego. This journey promised long driving days and scorching desert heat, so Rita and the girls flew to visit her folks while leaving Dad to gather all the toys and head for the border.
I decided to take some solo time to do some surfing and exploring, which would have been difficult to do with kids. The Baja was hit by various tropical storms during this time and I was able to take full advantage of the ensuing swells which created wonderful waves all around the east and west capes.
Fishing in Los Barriles did not improve from what we had seen in April, so I did not spend too much time chasing fish. The waves provided enough entertainment to keep me busy and tired.
My great friend Alan agreed to join me on the return drive to San Diego to keep me company and get to know the Baja, which had eluded him until then. The Baja welcomed him with hot weather, great fresh fish, delicious flour tortillas and a fragrance of adventure.
Little did we know that a day into our return trip, as we were camped in the town of Cerritos, the camper would be broken into. The thieves did not only take laptop computers, passports, cellphones and watches, but also threw the contents of every cupboard and closet onto the beds and floor. It was not the way we wanted to start our trip, but we had to grieve, accept and move on.
These things are bound to happen in any country when you travel. Thievery is not a Mexican problem, but rather a human problem and one is bound to run into it from time to time. Suffice to say that it was a bitter part of the trip which we were able to put behind us with every mile we drove north.
