We arrived in Whitehorse and toured the capital city of the Yukon. It is amazing to think that the entire geographical expanse of the Yukon only contains 36,000 people and Whitehorse is home to 24,000 or about 60% of the Yukon's population.
We used this opportunity to get a new tire to replace the one that went flat on the camper as we drove out of Atlin, BC. We were amazed by the swarms of people frequenting Canadian Tire, Walmart and Superstore as we stocked up on groceries and went out for dinner in this bustling outpost.
We visited the SS Klondike paddle-wheel boat which used to take guests along the mighty Yukon River and is now dry docked as a National Historic Site in downtown Whitehorse. The girls got a quick lesson in mechanical engineering as they learned about steam engines from Mark. They also compared their trip on a cruise ship in Florida this past February to the offerings on this ship from the past.
Before bed, we spent another few hours at the playground burning off the kids' energy. Mark and I walked along the paved pathway beside the Yukon River and noticed all the folks on bikes commuting home from work or going for a leisurely jog. It was quite a change from the rural outposts we have seen since we began the trek north.
