Seward, Alaska

From Soldotna, we headed south to the picturesque seaside town of Seward, AK. The weather was perfect and we were able to camp right next to the beach. For five days, we saw sea otters and bald eagles while eating breakfast! Cruise ships, tug boats, sailboats, charter ships and an armada of fishing boats drove past our campsite like clockwork, as they headed south out of Resurrection Bay in the morning and returned home every evening.

We spent our first days wandering the marina docks and marveling at all the boats. We saw the halibut and salmon hanging on display after a successful fishing charter had returned for the day. The bright orange rockfish were also on the chopping block to be filleted for an evening meal.

After witnessing the strong winds and whitecaps that seemed to surface every day in the afternoon, we decided to head out in the early morning. We woke the girls bright and early to travel 14 miles to the end of Resurrection Bay to do some salmon fishing. They were great sports and we were well rewarded for our efforts. Sea otters, bald eagles, seals, puffins and a variety of seabirds were seen from close range. The girls marveled at moon jellies and lion-bearded jellyfish in the water as well. We saw humpback whales feeding from a distance and massive glaciers reaching down to the ocean from the Harding Ice Fields. After a few lost fish, due to my novice netting skills and barb-less hooks, Mark finally reeled in a big beautiful silver salmon which we feasted on over the fire that evening.

Having our own little boat has enabled us to get out on the water and explore the true beauty and bounty of Alaska. While we were sitting in our little 15 foot aluminum boat, we were all shocked and awed as an enormous humpback whale breached 20 feet away. We heard the striking "poooohhhhh" of its blowhole as it took a breath and stared in amazement as it swam past us. It was absolutely incredible and we were all wide-eyed with wonder. Mark couldn't have said it better, " Now that's what this trip is about!"
