Downtown Tapalpa, Jalisco, Mexico
Tapalpa is a little gem of a town in the mountains of Jalisco. The wooden architecture, red brick cathedral, and cobblestone streets are all beautiful, but the food is the real attraction. While we were visiting, we feasted on queso fundido con chorizo (melted cheese and sausage eaten with corn tortillas), panela (fresh goat cheese) and borrego hot off the grill. The girls were a little horrified at the idea of lamb for lunch, but it was delicious! We had to walk through the town square to digest all that cheese and meat in our bellies before stopping in a local creamery for the cajeta (butterscotch) which has made the town famous. It's rich reputation is definitely deserved for it tastes like a spoonful of heaven and Heidi probably gobbled up half a jar with her apple the next day.
