Estero Coyote, Baja, Mexico

From Guerrero Negro, we headed to Campo Rene on the shores of Estero Coyote. We spent a little over a week trapped at the estuary camp, after two thunderstorms washed out the roads and left us without an exit. Thankfully, we were “stuck” in a beautiful and magical place. We saw osprey eating fish in their nests and heard coyotes yipping as they hunted the sand bars at night. White pelicans, cormorants, and a variety of gulls fed on the abundant fish in the estuary. We went canoeing through the shallow waters and spotted dolphins feeding during the tidal changes. Mark was out on the boat every day and caught Corvina, Grunt, Halibut, Triggerfish, Leopard Grooper and Spotted Bay Bass from our boat along the shores of the mangroves. We explored miles of white sand beaches and found countless sand dollars and even a dolphin skeleton which was intact! The nights were amazing and the sky was filled with more stars than I have ever seen before, since there were no lights for miles.
When the surf calmed, we were even able to get out into the open ocean to do some fishing in the Pacific. The waters were less abundant than we had hoped, but the dolphins and sea lions were fun to watch and the girls had great fun doing some swimming out in the deep water away from the stingrays which swarmed the sandy shallow shores.
