Byron Glacier, Portage, Alaska

From Anchorage, we headed south to Portage. The girls loved the fact that it was only an hour's drive to get there! We explored the creeks and rivers, but the salmon had yet to arrive.

The next day we checked out Portage Glacier from a distance and admired the blue ice from our campsite. We went hiking to Byron Glacier which we were told was great for kids. The girls found ice worms in the glacial ice which live off of algae and pollen spores with the ranger's assistance and they spent an hour or more making arrowheads out of the slate rocks at the bottom of the glacier. Heidi drank from the glacier's run-off and fashioned a spear with one of the arrowheads.
